Projects

As an important player in the community radio sector, we realize the need to develop innovative projects that will improve and position the community radio stations as contributors to South Africa’s Social Cohesion and Nation Building. To this end, we are implementing the following projects:

Never Again! Campaign

Never again is a competition to showcase the role played by community radio stations in the fight against domestic violence, through their use of the airwaves and participation in advocacy campaigns in partnership with their local organisations. The competition aims to mobilise community radio stations to develop innovative media an advocacy campaigns during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Abuse, taking place every year from 25 Nov – 10 Dec. The Never Again! Campaign seeks to:
o Use the power of community radio in the fight against domestic violence
o Further quality and professionalism in community radio programme production
o Recognize for creative content development and local partnership in promoting the fight against domestic violence

HANASERin

HANASERin (a partnership between Serongwanyane Technologies and Highway Africa News Agency - HANA) will aggregate, produce and distribute news and information on development across South Africa, via the satellite network platform.

HANASERin aims to become the largest electronic media distributor of development content in Africa, with a special focus on community and development media.

Our aim is to reflect the diversity of reporting, analysis, articles and commentary from as many as possible of the community media institutions in every part of Africa. Our additional sources of content will include government, business and civil society.

The objectives of this services are:

  • To develop a community radio driven and led news and current affairs network
  • To train community radio stations editors on how to produce quality and development oriented news
  • To provide an alternative source of news aimed at providing news from a development perspective

Bahlodi Community Radio Awards

More than 90 community radio stations broadcast daily to specific communities using local languages and focusing on local content. At present these stations receive very little recognition for the passionate work they are doing to inform, educate and entertain their constituents. The Bahlodi Community Radio Awards will ensure:

  • Recognition for quality programme contents development
  • Furthering professionalism in community radio broadcasting
  • Recognition for creative contents development.

Community Radio Development Trust

Serongwanyane Technologies has realized the existing and pressing need of community radio stations for financial assistance and that these community radio stations require financial assistance for their continued existence.
Serongwanyane Technologies also is aware of the immense role played by the community radio stations in the community with respect to social cohesion and nation building.

Given the role that the community radio stations have played in the growth of Serongwanyane Technologies, Serongwanyane Technologies has created a Trust to assist the community radio stations financially. The community radio stations will be the sole beneficiaries of this trust. The Community Radio Development Trust will be a shareholder in Serongwanyane Technologies (Pty) LTD.
